NEW YORK – JUNE 2009 – RAPSEL, the innovative luxury sanitary company based in Milan, happily celebrates a design installed 25 years ago that still impresses years later. Andrée Putman’s specially-designed Morgans washbasin for the Morgans New York continues to greet customers two and half decades after its installation. Andree Putman’s sleek design has proven itself timeless, and Rapsel continues to offer it to discerning buyers all over the globe, including the new hotel Le Café de Paris in Biarritz.
ANDREE PUTMAN & RAPSEL
The Morgans Hotel has become enmeshed in the chic threads of New York, no victim to trend or fad. And then, so has Andrée Putman’s sleek stainless-steel Morgans washbasin, designed specifically for the venue. So much so then when the hotel underwent a total renovation, the legendary bathrooms, in black-white chessboard pattern, with Andrée Putman’s washstands, remained untouched. It’s a timeless, iconic design that’s been imitated so often, the Morgans Hotel is proud to keep the original.
THE MORGANS HOTEL
The Morgans Hotel, and its interior designer Andrée Putman, essentially created the modern idea of the “Boutique Hotel” when it opened on Madison Avenue in New York 25 years ago. With meticulous attention to every design detail, one of the hottest restaurant in New York (Asia de Cuba), and Putnam’ s legendary design, The Morgans Hotel pioneered fresh, high design for hotels.
ANDRÉE PUTMAN: ABOVE TASTE
Andrée Putman was born in Paris on December 23, 1925. She designs everything from hotels to museums, a versatility in taste that has allowed her to stay one step ahead of other designers. She describes all of her best work as the “perfect balance between discipline and revolt.”

RAPSEL CELEBRATES A CENTURY OF INSPIRATION BY GIO PONTI
* * *
NEW YORK – JUNE 2009 – RAPSEL, the innovative luxury sanitary company based in Milan, is thoroughly committed to launching the most innovative and contemporary designs in the world, but what is so modern has often come from the prescient, intuitive mind of Gio Ponti, a designer so ahead of his times that his work with Rapsel, like the sleek Montecatini resin washbasin, looks as fresh today as it has for an entire century.
GIO PONTI & RAPSEL
Though it seems that Rapsel’s Montecatini washbasin, with its soft, clean lines and pleasingly unconventional features, must have been designed within the last ten years, it is in fact a 1933 design from Gio Ponti, then in the second decade of his decade. It was originally designed in cast-iron for the at-the-time avant-garde bathrooms of the Palazzo Montecatini, headquarters for the Italian company. The extraordinarily shaped fixture is wall-mounted, rectangular, and made of white ceramic or titanic resin. Water notably drains to the right, a feature that draws our eye in intriguing ways whether its 1939 or 2009.
THE LANDMARK PRIMO PALAZZO MONTECATINI
An architectural milestone for Gio Ponti was the headquarters of the Montecatini company. Ponti created for this building his own marble which he calls ‘Tempesta’, cut in a before unknown method. Other innovative details of the Palazzo Montecatini included state-of-the-art climatization, brand new telephone nets, and, of course, the most modern bathrooms and toilets for which he designed the Montecatini washbasin.
GIO PONTI: ARCHITECT, DESIGNER, EDITOR
Gio Ponti was born in Milan on November 18th, 1891. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the Politecnico in Milan in 1921 – the beginning of a six decade career
that promised not only architecture, but painting, design, teaching, and journalism. His singular work and personality enabled him to define and, in some ways, create the profession and idea of the ‘designer’ in the first half of the 20th century.
